SEAI Better Energy Homes Scheme
Who is eligible to apply?
The scheme is open to all houses built prior to 2006, including rental properties.
What items are needed when applying?
- Your MPRN Number (found on your electricity bill)
- Name & address
- E-Mail Address
- Contractor ID number (Breffni Insulation ID number: 10013)
- Your Bank Details
- The grant is only eligible for homes built before 2006
- Grant approval must be in place before works commence
- Grant works must be completed to SEAI standards by a SEAI registered contractor
- Grant works, including a published BER, must be completed and paperwork submitted to SEAI within six months of the grant offer
From March 2015 new increased grants and bonus payments are available for the following measures:

The scheme is now available for previous applicants to get additional works completed.
The previous minimum grant threshold of €400 has been abolished.

SEAI Warmer Homes Scheme
This scheme is available to homes which meet the following criteria:
- Owner occupied non-Local Authority homes
- Constructed before 2006
- The owner is in receipt of one of the following:
- Fuel Allowance as part of the National Fuel Scheme or
- Job Seekers Allowance for over six months and with children under 7 years of age or
- Family Income Supplement or
- In receipt of the "One Parent Family Payment" or
- Domiciliary Care Allowance
The service involves the installation of standard energy efficiency measures appropriate to the eligible household subject to SEAI survey, budget allocation and available capacity. The service is provided at no cost to the household and the measures currently available under this scheme are:
- External Wall Insulation
- Internal Wall Insulation
- Cavity Wall insulation
- Attic insulation
- Draught proofing
- Lagging jackets
- Heating Upgrades
- Low energy light bulbs
- Energy advice

Warmth and Wellbeing Pilot Scheme
The Warmth and Wellbeing Scheme aims to improve the living conditions of vulnerable people living with chronic respiratory conditions. The initiative is led by the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment, along with the Department of Health and the Health Services Executive (HSE).
This is a referral based scheme and no direct applications to the SEAI are possible. To qualify for the scheme you must be referred by the HSE and meet all of the eligibility criteria. To find out more information about this scheme please click here.
Electric Ireland Energy Efficiency grant
The homeowner must be a customer of Electric Ireland and all works completed must comply to SEAI standards. Please call us for more information on how you can claim energy credits back on your electricity or gas bill once works are complete.

Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) Scheme
The Home Renovation Incentive (HRI) Scheme provides for tax relief for Homeowners and Landlords by way of an Income Tax credit at 13.5% of qualifying expenditure on repair, renovation or improvement works carried out on a main home or rental property.
The amount of the HRI tax credit depends on the amount spent on qualifying works. Tax relief can be claimed on qualifying expenditure over €4,405 (before VAT at 13.5%) per property. This €4,405 (before VAT) can be the total from any number of jobs carried out and paid for from 25 October 2013 to 31 December 2018 for Homeowners claiming on their main home and on or after 15 October 2014 and up to 31 December 2018 for Landlords claiming on their rental property. While there is no upper limit on expenditure on qualifying works, the tax credit will only be given in relation to a maximum of €30,000 (before VAT at 13.5%) per property.
